Exclusive Salmonella filled Choco Cake!!
5th December 2007, Wednesday
One of the big news locally has to be the tragic case of 109 people down with food poisoning, some of the cases are pretty chronic and need hospitalization; after all had consumed chocolate cake from local confectionery chain, Prima Deli...
This is perhaps a stain in our impeccable F&B records in Singapore, unlike some developing countries who are used to churning out cardboard Baos or industrial waste Sichuan vegetables...
The company was prompt to do their own investigation following the food poisoning fiasco and claimed it was a staff at the factory that was a carrier of the salmonella bacteria which was the root of the illness...
Our local authorities, Agricultural and Veterinary Authority of Singapore immediately advised us to not take any Prima Deli's bakery products and the chain was forced to stop operation so close to the X'mas...
This surely will affect their business which should be rosy during festive season and at the long run, an uphill task to win back faith from customers... I can hear the likes of Bread Talk, Bengawan Solo & Four Leaves laughing to their bank at the fall of one of their closest competitor....
Then again Singaporean are a bunch with transcient memory, once Prima start pushing a bun at 50 cents each, everyone will risk their gastrointestinal system for some cheap breads...
I wonder if the CEO of the Prima Group will make public apology like the shameful Fujiya Co. president for the scandal of using expired ingredients for their confectionery products earlier this year which prompted his resignation
Personally I am looking for a log cake for the season, but unlikely will choose Prima Deli due the fact that their cakes are always overpriced and the cost was not duly justified...
Luckily the red-dyed vegetables from the farms nearby Tengah Airbase was not released into the market...
With food such a precious commodity these days, such news surely doesn't inject much confidence in our local scene with the festive season just at our doorsteps...
A better piece of news would be that our local athletes are performing up to expectation in the SEA Games held at Korat, Thailand...
The shooters (I really don't know what's a better terms for them) outperformed themselves to clinch a good haul of 8 gold medals and could have gotten more if luck hadn't eluded them... So before the games actually opened in full force, we are sitting nicely behind host nation, Thailand in the medals table...
Our table tennis teams are getting into their form to make it into the finals of the team competition, so we shall hope to reign in that area this time round again...
Of course the usual suspects like swimming, water polo, bowling etc. will hope to boost in the overall haul of gold medals...
One of the most elusive gold medal, we would love to possess would be the soccer gold medal and the Young Lions (Under 23) after a dismal 0:0 draw with minnows Laos, get their campaign on track with a 3:2 victory of group rival, Vietnam and if we could get at least a draw against neighbors Malaysia, we'll be in the semis and I am sure most Singaporeans will love to get one over the Tigers and go into the semis in good form...
Seems like Sports Council's efforts are bearing fruits, let's hope for the best after the games to see whether we can break our own records in terms of medals attained and perhaps pipped many neighbors with bigger pool of sports talent to call upon...
On personal front, seems like the left-sided gum of my lower jaw had swelled overnight since yesterday and despite not creating unbearable or acute pains, I fear it might proliferate into something bad...let's hope it subside like the last swell (caused by an ulcer) the last time round...
What I truly fear that it might be a wisdom tooth and seriously this is not the right time for a wisdom tooth extraction..yikes...

Japanese word of the day: 歯 ~ha~(Tooth) I fear to visit the dentist more than anything else in the world...at least I wouldn't spoil my teeth with chocolate cake this festive season
