Island in the Limelight...

6th July 2005, Wednesday

As the title implied a lot of media attention was focused on our little island nation...no not National Day comes early...
But it has been buzzing for a month or so now that Singapore play host to the IOC (International Olympics Committee) members for their vote of confidence to any of the 5 cities vying for the rights to host the 2012 Olympics....After the presentation for the last 2 days, the decision would be coming out at around 7.30pm local time on whether London, Paris, New York, Madrid or Moscow would be awarded the ultimate kitty...

Polticians and celebratites have been arriving to our sunny tropical island like ocean waves to generate interests for their respective cities and hopefully can use their "star power" to pull the quotient to their favour...
Politicians like the UK PM, Tony Blair, French President, Jacques Chirac and New York Senator, Hilary Clinton with mayor Micheal Bloomberg were accompanied with sporting celebrities like the England National Football team captain, David Beckham (with his celebrity spouse, Slutty..I mean Posh Spice aka Victoria); Beckham's Real Madrid team-mate, Raul, former French World Cup winning captain, Laurent Blanc, currently crowned NBA champions Tony Parker of San Antonio Spurs, perhaps the fastest swimmer in the world Ian Thorpe, the boxing legend Muhammed Ali etc all made their way here to stand by their cities...
The line-up was sending the mundane people of Singapore well star-struck and thus resulted in endless media buzz which would continue till the end of the week...

Winning the prized right of hosting the world sporting event would meant a lot of revenues to coup for respective cities thus the fight was well intensified and each participant would grind till the very last minute, despite now the pendulum is swinging to the favour of either London or Paris...
I guess the whole media buzz is also because of the heavyweight cities been involved which are from powerful nations in current world economy climate, so no one wants to look bad as a loser...

so what does all these got to do with yours truly..absolutely nothing.. I don't really give a damn..the politicians and celebrities would return home at the end of it, cursing the tormenting weather here...

Well beside the whole Olympics bid, a world-renowned novel/comic writer sneaked into our country perhaps by invitation of the British Council..the one and only Neil Gaiman...

Really enjoyed his Sandman run for DC/Vertigo during my comic frenzy days...
His story is always unconventional and fresh to read from the usual superheroes thingie offered then...
My buddy over at Osaka is a much hardcore Gaiman fanboy..He was really cursing his luck a month back when I informed him about the imminent arrival of Gaiman to Singapore...because he had to be stuck in his Osaka job attachment now...
well 3 faithful words to console him... "HA HA SUCKER!"

On the work front, the 2nd day of JxMMy's absence and the eve of a server shutdown, therefore some frenzy submission by the users here which got me all busy the moment work starts till lunch time...

Japanese word of the day: よこそ ~yo-ko-so~ (Welcome) to all to have arrived to our country, hope you have some merry returns beside the sunburn of course.
