A Grim Movie Choice
2nd October 2005, Sunday
Time now is 1.30 am into a humid Sunday dusk, just returned from my movie session with my La Tendo clique, not the best choice of movie this time...abit of that later
Made my way to my usual toy/hobby pilgrimage by around 2 plus, bypassing my lass' place to pick up a DVD to return to Karen and the heavy, grey clouds suddenly decided to throw showers on me...just my luck as elsewhere such as in town, it was still bright and sunny...
To the shop, the usual Saturday hustle bustle especially with a huge batch of new stocks arriving...
Chan was there and so was Ferris, however the former left moments after I had arrived and mentioned he won't be joining us for movie this evening despite the very fact that he did helped bought the tickets and went through all the troubles to liaise with everyone for the ideal timing and find the best seats and yet he could not make it for the show...how queer was that?
It sure baffled everyone of us and Tay-chan meekly muttered that he would be too engrossed to celebrate Children's day as later on the day he did smsed each of us to wish us a happy C Day...
Karen eventually joined us as we wondered around the new creation of Ferris, a Mizuho from "Onegai Teacher" with plenty of skin to show.. it was really well done except for some blemishes which we novice pointed out with microscopic scrutiny...
With the huge shipment everyone was at the brunt of pillaging our existing budgets and the worst had to be Karen who willingly plunge $200+ into her pockets to pay for a couple of sets of One Piece collectibles...meanwhile Karen kept coaxing Ferris to buy a box of the newly arrived "Ichigo 100%" trading cards which he duly succumbed later on
We then headed off to Plaza Singapura to watch Tim Burton's new stop motion tale, "Corpse Bride"...
This was in usual Burton's gothic and melancholic style and he once again roped in buddies like Johnny Depp to voice the lead character, Victor Van Dort as well as Danny Elfman in the soundtrack with some wonderful musical displays which to me had to be the bext parts of the show...
"Nightmare before X'mas", the sleeper 1993 hit was still a hot festive movie especially raving in Japan and Burton wanted to follow it up with a almost similar "Corpse Bride"...however it shown too much resemblance yet as the papers rated it having a very thin plot which was all so true about Victor, a son of a fish trading family who wanted to get into high royal society when they trying to betrothed to Victoria, a daughter of a bankrupt Lord who wanted the marriage to inject some money into his vault..
But with a twist of fate, Victor's fumbling nature was not well accustomed by his future in-laws and he fumbled to practise his vows to a corpse bride, Emily which began their mad cap adventure in netherworld to try to break that marriage vows...
The movie was really short around 75 minutes and to some it was wee bit too long...
The movie had been way too grey from beginning to the end and no one character was lovable , maybe that maggot in Emily's head but yet it looked like a wretched-looking Gollum from LOTR fame...
Which was really sad as Burton had been touted as such revolutionary storyteller and we all felt he told the story too much to his liking once again...
A bit wasted as the movie boosted such voice talents like Depp, Helena Bonham Carter (who reprised Micheal Jackson in Burton's "Planet of the Ape"), Tracy Ullman (yes that same freaky auntie) and Christopher Lee (no not the one dating Fann Wong).
Considering this being my first movie in the cinemas after a while, it definitely didn't worth the box office fee...
